The Story of Purley
Purley began as a small settlement in the 1850s. It started to grow and become more established.
Early Life in Purley
By 1879, Purley had its own post office. There were also several stores for shopping. The community had four sawmills and gristmills. Sawmills cut wood, and gristmills grind grain. About 150 people lived in Purley at this time. In 1896, a company that made mattresses was also located there.
Changes Over Time
In the 1900s, Purley's population started to shrink. By 1966, only about 20 people lived there. All the businesses had closed down. However, the community began to grow again. By 1972, the population reached 81 people. It stayed at this number through the year 2000. A new business opened in Purley in 1988.
Where is Purley Located?
Purley is found where two roads meet. These roads are Texas State Highway 37 and Farm to Market Road 900. It is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of a town called Mount Vernon.
Learning in Purley
In 1896, Purley had its own school. One teacher taught 66 students there. Today, students from Purley attend schools in the Mount Vernon Independent School District. This school district serves the community.
