Pushyamitra Sunga started the Shunga dynasty around 180 BCE. He was a general for the Mauryan emperor Brihadratha Maurya. Pushyamitra took control from Emperor Brihadratha and became king himself. His new dynasty, the Shunga dynasty, replaced the Mauryan Empire.

Pushyamitra performed a special horse sacrifice ritual called an ashvamedha yaga. This ritual showed that he was a powerful ruler. Through this, he brought most of North India under his rule. He ruled for many years until his death in 149 BCE.

Pushyamitra Sunga was a very important figure in ancient Indian history. He created the Shunga Empire, which followed the large Mauryan Empire. His actions changed the political map of India.

From General to King

What Happened After Pushyamitra

After Pushyamitra's death, his son Agnimitra became the next ruler. The Shunga dynasty continued to rule for many years. They kept the region stable after the Mauryan Empire ended.
