Pybba (born around 570 AD, died around 606 AD) was an early king of Mercia, an important kingdom in ancient England. He is also known as Pibba or Wibba. Many historians believe he was the first known king of Mercia.

Pybba is important because many later kings of Mercia were his descendants. This means he was the ancestor of a long line of rulers. He was also the father of two other kings, Penda and Eowa.

Pybba: An Early King of Mercia

Pybba was the son of Creoda, who was another early leader in Mercia. Pybba likely ruled Mercia from about 593 AD to 606 AD.

A historian named Henry of Huntingdon wrote about Pybba. He mentioned Pybba ruling Mercia at the same time as other famous kings. For example, Pybba was king when King Aethelberht of Kent became a Christian. This helps us know when Pybba lived and ruled. He was active in the late 500s and early 600s.

Family and Legacy

Pybba's family was very important in Mercian history. Many kings who ruled Mercia after him, right up to Ceolwulf, said they were related to Pybba. This shows how significant he was to the royal family.

Pybba also had a daughter. She married Cenwalh of Wessex, who was a king of Wessex. This marriage helped connect the royal families of Mercia and Wessex. Pybba either died or was removed from power around 606 AD.
