قومی ترانہ
English: National Anthem of Pakistan
Qaumī Tarāna
National anthem of  Pakistan
Lyrics Hafeez Jullundhri
Music Ahmed Ghulamali Chagla, 1950
Adopted 1954

The Qaumī Tarāna (Urdu: قومی ترانہ) is the official national anthem of Pakistan. An anthem is a special song that represents a country. Pakistan did not have its own national anthem right away when it became independent on August 14, 1947.

When Pakistan's flag was first raised during the independence ceremony, a song called "Pakistan Zindabad, Azadi Paendabad" was played. The flag itself had only been approved a few days earlier. The words for Pakistan's national anthem were written later by a famous Urdu poet named Abu-Al-Asar Hafeez Jullundhri.

Words of the Anthem

The Qaumi Tarana is sung in Urdu. Here are the words, their transliteration (how they sound), and what they mean in English.

How the Anthem Was Created

Creating a national anthem takes time. Here's a timeline of how Pakistan's anthem came to be:

  • 1949: The music for the anthem was composed by Ahmad G. Chagla. It was designed to be about 1 minute and 20 seconds long.
  • 1952: The words were written by Hafeez Jullundhri. His verses were chosen from 723 different entries submitted by poets.
  • 1954: The complete national anthem was officially released. It was played on Radio Pakistan on August 13th. Many singers helped record the anthem, including Ahmad Rushdi, Shamim Bano, and others.
