Quebracho Herrado is a small town in Argentina. It is located in the San Justo Department of Córdoba Province, Argentina. This community is known for a famous battle that happened there in 1840. The town has about 317 people living in it. It is about 238 kilometers (148 miles) away from the big city of Córdoba.

History of Quebracho Herrado

The "Shod Quebracho" Tree

A long time ago, in the early 1800s, Argentina had many grasslands and thorny bushes. There was a special group of quebracho trees near the path that connected the cities of Córdoba and Santa Fe Province. One of these trees was very tall. It had a horseshoe nailed to its trunk. This tree marked the border between the Córdoba and Santa Fe provinces.

The name Quebracho Herrado means "shod quebracho" in Spanish. It refers to this unique tree with the horseshoe.

Early Fort and Battle

In 1816, the government of Buenos Aires built a fort here. It was called the Fuerte Posta de Quebracho Herrado. This fort helped protect the area.

A very important event happened near here on November 28, 1840. This was the Battle of Quebracho Herrado. It took place about 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of where the town is today.

The Battle of Quebracho Herrado

The battle was fought between two large groups of people in Argentina's civil wars. One group was called the Unitarians. They had about 4,200 soldiers and were led by Juan Lavalle. The other group was called the Federalists. They had about 6,400 soldiers and were led by Manuel Oribe, who used to be the President of Uruguay.

The Federalists won this battle. Later, when the Unitarians gained power in Argentina, they renamed the battle site Campo Lavalle. This was to honor their leader, Juan Lavalle.
