Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Quide were a group of Native American people who lived in the area that is now Texas. They were known to be friends with the Jumano people. We know about the Quide mainly from records made in the late 1600s.

Who Were the Quide?

The Quide were one of many different Native American groups living in what is now the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They had their own culture, traditions, and way of life. Like other groups, they likely hunted, gathered food, and lived in harmony with their environment.

Their Home in Texas

Historical records tell us that the Quide lived in a specific part of Texas. They were located about three days' travel east of the mouth of the Concho River. The Concho River flows through west-central Texas. This area would have provided them with resources like water, plants, and animals. It was a good place for their community to thrive.

A Desire for Missionaries

In 1683, a man named Juan Sabeata reported something important about the Quide. Sabeata was a Jumano leader who often helped Spanish explorers. He said that the Quide people wanted missionaries to come and teach them. Missionaries were religious teachers, usually from Europe, who traveled to new lands. They aimed to share their beliefs with local people. This report suggests the Quide were open to new ideas or seeking alliances at that time.
