Quinatzin (full name: Quinatzin Tlaltecatzin) was an important king of ancient Texcoco. Texcoco was a powerful city-state in what is now Mexico. He is known as the very first ruler of Texcoco and is sometimes called Quinatzin II.

Who Was Quinatzin?

Quinatzin was a leader of the Chichimeca people. His full name was Quinatzin Tlaltecatzin. He played a big role in the history of his people.

Moving the Capital

Before Quinatzin, the main city for the Chichimeca people was Tenayuca. Quinatzin decided to move the center of power. He made Texcoco the most important city, and Tenayuca became less important. This change helped Texcoco grow into a major city.

His Family

Quinatzin's father was named Tlotzin Pochotl. His mother was a noblewoman named Icpacxochitl.

Quinatzin married a Princess from Huexotla named Cuauhcihuatzin. She became Queen and was the mother of his son, Techotlalatzin. Techotlalatzin later became king after his father. Quinatzin's grandson was Ixtlilxochitl I, who also became a famous ruler. His mother-in-law was named Tomiyauh.
