About Régine Deforges

Régine Deforges made history by becoming the first woman in France to own and run a publishing company. This means she was in charge of printing and selling books.

Her Most Famous Book

Her novel, La Bicyclette bleue (which means The Blue Bicycle), was published in 1981. It quickly became the biggest bestseller in France. In 2000, it was even turned into a television series.

The story of The Blue Bicycle takes place during World War II. It is about love, strong feelings, and how people survive during difficult times. This popular book grew into a series of seven books.

The Book's Court Case

The Blue Bicycle also led to a big court case about who owned the ideas in a book. This is called an intellectual property case. At first, a court said that Deforges had copied parts of Margaret Mitchell's famous book, Gone with the Wind.

Régine Deforges openly said that the first 70 pages of her book were inspired by Mitchell's novel. However, her entire book was 1200 pages long. She appealed the court's decision, and she won her case. The order for her to pay money was canceled.

Other Roles and Life

Régine Deforges was once the president of the Société des Gens de Lettres de France. This is a group for French writers. She was also a member of the Prix Femina jury, which is a committee that gives out a famous French book award. She lived in the city of Paris, France.

Montmorillon: A City of Writing

Régine Deforges had a special idea for her hometown, Montmorillon. She wanted to turn it into a "City of Writing." Since 2000, the town has had museums and bookshops that are all about books and writing.

The idea for Montmorillon to become a Book town came from Deforges herself. At the time, she was a local council member. The town already had a history of making paper. Her idea received support from both local people and people around the world. The old part of the town, which is from the Middle Ages, received a lot of money to help with this project. Now, Montmorillon is known as a book town.
