Río Grande is a city located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas. It serves as the main town for the Río Grande Municipality. It is the fifth largest city in Zacatecas.

Río Grande is in the north-central part of the state. In 2020, its population was 35,050 people. The city is famous as "El Granero de la Nación," which means "The Nation's Granary." This is because it produces more beans than any other place in Mexico. It is also the biggest seller of beans in the country's main bean-growing area.

History of Río Grande

Early Inhabitants

Before the Spanish arrived, the area around Río Grande was home to different groups of Chichimeca people. These included the Guachichil and Irritila tribes.

Founding and Recognition

Local stories say that a Spanish settlement was started in Río Grande on August 18, 1562. Later, on March 5, 1689, a Spanish court called the Royal Audiencia of Guadalajara officially recognized the town. They named it Santa Elena de Río Grande.

Becoming a Municipality

Río Grande became the main town of its own area, called a municipality. This happened on October 29, 1833. At first, it was part of the Nieves area in Zacatecas. Then, on August 19, 1916, Río Grande officially became a free municipality.

The climate in Río Grande is known as a warm semi-arid climate. This type of climate is also called a Steppe climate. It means the area is generally dry but not a desert. It has warm temperatures and not a lot of rain.

Population of Río Grande

Río Grande is one of the two main urban areas in its municipality. In the 2020 census, the city had a population of 35,050 people. This was an increase from 32,944 inhabitants recorded in the 2010 census.

Economy of Río Grande

The most important economic activity in Río Grande is agriculture. The city is especially known for growing beans.

Bean Production

Río Grande produces a huge amount of beans each year, about 51,337 tons. This makes it the biggest producer of beans in all of Mexico. For example, Santiago Ixcuintla, another big bean-producing area, produces 40,530 tons annually.

In 2008, about 70,450 hectares of land in Río Grande were used to grow beans. A hectare is a unit of area, like a very large field. In 2005, the total area used for all crops was 84,624 hectares. This shows how important farming is to the city.
