Río de Oro (Catatumbo) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Río de Oro is an important river that flows through two countries: Colombia and Venezuela. It's like a natural border for part of its journey!

Where the River Starts

The Río de Oro begins high up in the mountains. Its source, or starting point, is on the eastern side of the Serranía de Los Motilones mountain range. This area is part of the Catatumbo Barí Natural Park, which is in the very northern part of the Norte de Santander Department in Colombia. Imagine it as a tiny stream forming in a beautiful natural park!

Its Journey and Where it Ends

After starting in Colombia, the river flows towards the east. For a while, it actually follows the line that separates Colombia and Venezuela. This means it acts like a natural boundary between the two countries.

Eventually, the Río de Oro flows fully into Venezuela. It then joins a bigger river called the Catatumbo River. The Catatumbo River is located in the state of Zulia in Venezuela. So, the Río de Oro is a tributary, meaning it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one.
