The Start of Torani
Italian Soda Fun
In the 1920s, the Torres had a cool idea. They mixed their special flavors with sparkling water. This was how they introduced Italian soda to cafes in their new home. People loved it, and soon the Torres began selling their Torani Syrups. The very first flavors they made were Anisette, Grenadine, Lemon, Orgeat (which is an almond flavor), and Tamarindo.
After Prohibition
In 1933, a time called the Prohibition ended in the United States. During Prohibition, it was against the law to make or sell alcohol. When it ended, Ezilda Torre became one of the first people in the US allowed to prepare distilled spirits. Torani continued to sell products like California Vermouth during tough times like the Great Depression and World War II.
A New Drink Idea
Torani is famous for creating the world's first flavored latte. This happened in 1982. They combined their delicious flavorings with espresso coffee and steamed milk. This made a brand new kind of coffee drink that became very popular.
Who Owns Torani Now?
Today, Torani is owned by Lisa Lucheta. She is the granddaughter of the company's founders, Rinaldo and Ezilda Torre. The company is led by its CEO, Melanie Dulbecco. What's really neat is that some of the company's team members also own a part of Torani. This is through something called an Employee Stock Ownership Program. About 400 people work for Torani.
Where Torani Is Made
For many years, from the late 1990s until March 2020, Torani's main offices and factories were in South San Francisco, California. In March 2020, the company moved its headquarters to San Leandro, California. This move happened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
