Building the R142 Trains
These modern subway cars were built between 1999 and 2003. A lot of them were made! There are 880 cars with numbers from 6301 to 7180. Another 150 cars are numbered from 1101 to 1250. This means there are 1,030 R142 cars in total.
How R142 Cars Run
The R142 cars usually run in groups. They are often linked together in sets of five cars. This helps them carry many passengers at once.
Replacing Older Trains
The R142 trains were built to replace older subway cars. They took the place of trains known as the "Redbirds." These Redbird trains included models like the R26, R28, R29, R33, R33S, and R36. The R142 brought a fresh, new look and better technology to the subway lines.
