The Radding Building is a big, old building in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. You can find it at 143-147 State Street. It was built in 1915 by Edward Radding. A local architect named Charles R. Greco designed it. The building looks like a classic old style. For many years, it was the main office for the Mutual Fire Assurance Company. This important building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The Radding Building
The Radding Building is one of the tallest buildings on State Street. It stands out in downtown Springfield.
What It Looks Like
The Radding Building is on the south side of State Street. It is right where State Street meets Willow Street. The building stretches a whole city block along Willow Street. Across the street, you can see the MassMutual Center. That's a big sports and convention place.
The Radding Building is eight stories tall. Its main sides are made of stone and light-colored brick. The bottom two floors are special. On the State Street side, they have fancy columns. These columns have detailed tops called Corinthian capitals. The Willow Street side also has decorative parts.
There are special ledges between the second and third floors. More ledges are above the third and seventh floors. Windows are grouped in pairs. They have cool designs between them on the third floor. The very top of the building has a decorative edge.
A Look Back in Time
The Radding Building was built in 1915. Before that, a house stood on the same spot. Edward Radding built the building. He was a real estate developer. He also had his own offices inside the building.
Over the years, many different groups used the Radding Building. It had offices, big rooms for events, and other meeting places. The Mutual Fire Assurance Company started renting space there in 1943. This company helps people with insurance for their homes. By 1949, they became the main tenant in the building.
