Radulf de Lamley facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Radulf de Lamley (also known as Ralph, Ranulf, or Randalph de Lamley) was an important church leader in the 1200s. He was a monk and a cleric, which means he was a religious official. We don't know much about his early life. He first appears in records around the 1220s as a Tironensian monk. This was a specific group of monks who followed strict rules.

Who Was Radulf de Lamley?

Radulf de Lamley became the leader of Arbroath Abbey, a large monastery, in the 1220s. He was known as the Abbot of Arbroath. He stayed in this important role until 1239.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1239, Radulf was chosen for an even bigger job. He became the Bishop of Aberdeen, taking over from Gilbert de Stirling. A bishop is a high-ranking church leader who oversees many churches in a certain area.

Life as a Bishop

People at the time, like the historian Hector Boece, said Radulf was chosen because he was very good at his job. Even as a bishop, he continued to live a simple and strict life, much like a monk.

  • He encouraged other church leaders in the cathedral to live simply too.
  • He kept a light diet, just like monks did.
  • He often walked when he visited churches in his area, instead of riding.

Important Actions as Bishop

Radulf de Lamley did several important things during his time as Bishop of Aberdeen:

  • He made sure that churches run by the local church council (called the chapter) did not have to pay certain church fees.
  • He confirmed gifts and grants that previous bishops had made to churches. This meant he agreed to keep those arrangements in place.
  • He took strong action against those who were responsible for the death of Padraig, Earl of Atholl, who died in 1241. He officially excluded them from the church, which was a very serious punishment back then.

Radulf's Final Years

Radulf de Lamley passed away in 1247. We know it was before May 13th of that year. After his death, Peter de Ramsay was chosen to be the next Bishop of Aberdeen.
