Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Rafael Barraza Sánchez was born in 1928. From a young age, he felt a calling to serve the Catholic Church. He studied hard and worked towards becoming a priest. In 1951, when he was 22 years old, he was ordained. This was a very important step in his life and career within the Church.
Serving as a Bishop
Later in his life, Rafael Barraza Sánchez took on even bigger roles. In 1979, he became an auxiliary bishop for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Durango. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop lead the archdiocese, which is a large area of Catholic churches. He served in this role for two years.
Then, in 1981, he was appointed as the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mazatlán. This meant he was the main leader for all the Catholic churches and people in the Mazatlán area. He guided the community and managed the Church's activities there for many years, until 2005.
Later Years
After serving the Diocese of Mazatlán for 24 years, Bishop Barraza Sánchez retired in 2005. He passed away on July 26, 2020, at the age of 91. He is remembered for his long service and dedication to the Catholic Church in Mexico.
