Early Life and Film Start
Rafael Filippelli was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started working in the film world in the mid-1950s. His first job was as an assistant director, helping others make their movies.
In 1961, he directed his very first short film. It was called Porque hoy es sábado (which means "Because Today is Saturday"). This was the beginning of his long career in filmmaking.
Filmmaking and Challenges
Rafael Filippelli was part of a group of filmmakers called "Underground." This group included other talented people like Edgardo Cozarinsky and Néstor Lescovich. They worked together on creative film projects.
After a big political change happened in Argentina in 1976, Rafael Filippelli had to leave his home country. He lived in Mexico and later in Los Angeles for a while. This is called going into "exile" when someone has to leave their country, often for political reasons.
He eventually returned to Argentina. In 1985, he directed his first full-length movie, Hay unos tipos abajo. Later, his film The Absentee was shown at the Moscow International Film Festival, which is a big deal for movies.
Later Works and Recognition
In the 1990s, Rafael Filippelli made a special group of three films. These movies were all about the city of Buenos Aires. They mixed real-life documentary footage with made-up stories.
In 2007, he won an award for best director. This was at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema. He won for his film Música nocturna (meaning "Night Music").
Teacher and Critic
Besides making films, Rafael Filippelli was also a film critic. This means he wrote and talked about movies, sharing his opinions and ideas. He was also a film theorist, which means he studied and wrote about the deeper ideas and meanings behind films.
He taught screenwriting at the Universidad del Cine (University of Cinema). He taught there from when the university first opened until he passed away. He shared his knowledge with many students who wanted to learn how to write movie scripts.
Rafael Filippelli was married to a writer named Beatriz Sarlo. They often worked together on projects. He passed away on 22 March 2023, at the age of 84.
