Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rafael Lluís Ninyoles i Monllor (born in 1943 – died on October 25, 2019) was a Spanish expert in how language is used in society. He is seen as one of the main people who started the study of Catalan sociolinguistics, along with Lluís Vicent Aracil i Boned.

He was born in Valencia. He went to a Jesuit school for his high school studies. There, he met friends who would also become important, like Alfons Cucó, Eliseu Climent, and Lluís Vicent Aracil. Later, he studied sociolinguistics at the Universitat de València. In 1967, he traveled to the United States of America to continue his studies.

After his studies, Rafael Ninyoles became a professor of Sociology at the University of Valencia. He also worked as an expert for local government bodies like the Diputació de València and Generalitat Valenciana. With Lluís Vicent Aracil, he looked closely at how two languages are used in the same place. They introduced the idea of diglossia. This term describes a situation where two languages (or two forms of the same language) are used, but one is seen as more important or powerful than the other. This was important for understanding the situation of people who spoke Catalan. He also wrote for many newspapers and magazines, such as Serra d'Or, Gorg, Cuadernos para el Diálogo, and El País. His articles often talked about the Valencian linguistic conflict, which was about the discussions and debates surrounding the Valencian language.
