Vijaya Raghunatha Pallavarayar Dorai Raja (1872–1930) was an important Indian civil servant and administrator. He was also a member of the royal family of Pudukkottai. He served as the Chief Minister of Pudukkottai state from 1909 to 1922. Later, he acted as a regent (someone who rules for a young or absent monarch) from 1922 to 1929.
Early Life and Education
Vijaya Raghunatha Pallavarayar was born in 1872 in Pudukkottai. His mother was Princess Brihadambal, the elder princess of Pudukkottai. His father was M.R.Ry. Kolandaswami Pallavarayar Sahib.
He was the grandson of Ramachandra Tondaiman, who was the Raja (ruler) of Pudukkottai at that time. He was also the older brother of Martanda Bhairava Tondaiman.
Pallavarayar studied at the University of Madras and earned a degree in arts. After finishing his studies, he joined the Madras Civil Service. This was a group of people who worked for the government. He worked as a Deputy Collector for a short time.
Leading Pudukkottai State
Vijaya Raghunatha Pallavarayar was a member of the Pudukkottai State Council from 1898 to 1909. This council helped make decisions for the state.
In 1909, he became the Chief Minister, also known as the Diwan, of Pudukkottai. He held this important position until 1922. During this time, he served under his younger brother, the Raja of Pudukkottai.
In 1922, his brother, Martanda Bhairava Tondaiman, decided to step back from ruling the state. He agreed to remain Raja only in name. He then appointed Vijaya Raghunatha Pallavarayar to govern Pudukkottai.
When Rajagopala Tondaiman became Raja in 1928 at just six years old, Pallavarayar continued to rule as regent. He officially left his position in February 1929. This happened when the Government of India set up a new council to rule the state.
His Later Years
Vijaya Raghunatha Pallavarayar passed away in 1930. He was 57 or 58 years old at the time of his death.
