About Rain Stones

The Story Behind the Book

Jackie French started writing Rain Stones when she was 30 years old. Before this, she only wrote books about gardening! She needed money to register her car, so she decided to try writing a children's book.

Back then, she lived in a small tin shed. Her housemates were a black snake called Gladys and a friendly wombat named Smudge. This unique living situation helped inspire some of her amazing stories!

Awards and Recognition

Rain Stones was recognized for its great stories! It was chosen as a finalist for several important awards:

  • It was a finalist for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards: Children's Book Award in 1991.
  • It was also a finalist for the CBCA Children's Book of the Year Award: Younger Readers in 1992.
  • In 1993, it was a finalist for the West Australian Young Readers' Book Award in the Primary Age Group.
