Rajneeshpuram facts for kids
Rajneeshpuram was a special community in Oregon, in the northwest United States. It was a place where people lived together because they shared the same spiritual beliefs. This community was made up entirely of followers of a spiritual teacher named Rajneesh, who was later known as Osho.
Rajneeshpuram was officially a city from 1981 to 1988. However, the community and its leaders faced big problems and conflicts with the government and local people. Some leaders were involved in serious events that caused a lot of trouble and led to the city's end.
Building the Community

The city of Rajneeshpuram was built on a large piece of land called the Big Muddy Ranch. This ranch was in Central Oregon and was bought in 1981. It cost about $5.75 million at that time.
In just three years, Rajneesh's followers, also called Rajneeshees, built a whole city. They changed the empty ranch into a busy place with up to 7,000 people. It had everything a city needs. This included a fire department, police, restaurants, and shops. They also built houses, an airport runway, and a bus system. The city even had its own system for cleaning water.
Land Use Problems
Soon after they arrived, the community leaders started having legal fights. These fights were mostly about how they were using the land. At first, they said they would create a small farming community. The land was only meant for farming.
But it quickly became clear that they wanted to build a full city. This included many buildings and services. This caused a lot of anger between the community and the people living nearby. Over the years, many groups of Oregon residents worked together to put pressure on the community.
