Ralph Robinson (priest) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ralph Robinson (1614–1655) was an English minister during a time of big changes in England. He was a Presbyterian, which means he followed a certain type of Christian faith. He became known for his preaching and was involved in some important events of his time.

Early Life and Education

Ralph Robinson was born in June 1614 in a place called Heswall, in Cheshire, England. When he was older, he went to St Catharine Hall, Cambridge, a famous university. He studied hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1638. A few years later, in 1642, he earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree from Cambridge as well.

Becoming a Minister

Because he was a good speaker, Ralph Robinson was invited to preach at a church in London called St. Mary's Woolnoth, located on Lombard Street. Around 1642, he officially became a Presbyterian minister there. This meant he was given the special role and authority to lead church services and guide his community in their faith.

Important Historical Events

Ralph Robinson played a part in the religious and political events of his era. In 1647, he served as a scribe, or secretary, for the first meeting of provincial ministers in London. These ministers were important religious leaders.

In 1649, England was going through a very difficult time. King Charles I was executed. Ralph Robinson and other ministers joined together to protest against this action, showing their strong disagreement with it.

Later, in 1651, Ralph Robinson was questioned about his connection to a group led by Christopher Love. This group was involved in a plan to bring the old royal family, the Stuarts, back to power in England. Ralph Robinson was held for a time in the Tower of London. It seems he was later pardoned, meaning he was forgiven for any involvement.

Later Life and Works

Ralph Robinson passed away on June 15, 1655. He was buried a few days later in the chancel of St. Mary Woolnoth church, where he had served as a minister. A friend named Simeon Ashe gave a special sermon at his funeral, which was later published as a book called The Good Man's Death Lamented.

Besides his sermons, Ralph Robinson also wrote two books:

  • Christ all in all, which was first published in London in 1656. It was so popular that it was printed again many times over the years.
  • Πανοπλία. Universa Arma (which means Hieron; or the Christian compleatly Armed), also published in London in 1656.
