Ralph Sneyd (born 1564 – died April 7, 1643) was an English landowner and a politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1640 to 1642. Ralph Sneyd was also a high-ranking officer, called a colonel, in the Royalist army during the English Civil War. He died while fighting on the Isle of Man.

Early Life and Family

Ralph Sneyd was the son of another man also named Ralph Sneyd. His family lived at a place called Keele Hall and in Bradwell. His mother was Mary Chetwynd. When he grew up, Ralph Sneyd inherited the family lands in Keele and Bradwell.

His Family

Ralph Sneyd married a woman named Felicia Archbold. They had a son, who was also named Ralph Sneyd. This younger Ralph Sneyd later married Jane Downes.

Political Career

In April 1640, Ralph Sneyd was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the area of Stafford. This was for a short meeting of Parliament. He was chosen again for Stafford in November 1640 for a longer period, known as the Long Parliament. He served in this role until 1642.

Role in the English Civil War

Ralph Sneyd became a colonel in the King's army during the English Civil War. This was a big conflict in England between those who supported the King and those who supported Parliament. Because he was loyal to the King, Sneyd faced many difficulties.

War Damages and Losses

His family home, Keele Hall, was badly damaged during the Civil War. Ralph Sneyd also lost a lot of money, about £20,000, because he supported the King. This was a huge amount of money back then!

His Death

Ralph Sneyd was killed on the Isle of Man. He died from the very last shot fired while defending the Countess of Derby.
