Ramón Rey Ardid (born December 20, 1903, in Zaragoza – died January 21, 1988) was a famous Spanish chess master. He was the Spanish chess champion for many years, from 1929 to 1942. Besides being a chess star, he was also a psychiatrist and a professor at Zaragoza University.

Early Chess Adventures

Ramón Rey Ardid started playing chess at a young age. In 1924, he represented Spain at the first unofficial Chess Olympiad in Paris. This was a big event for chess players from different countries.

He played well, winning 4 games, losing 5, and drawing 4. His team finished in 10th place. He also took part in a smaller tournament there, called the Consolation Cup.

In 1928, he won a special tournament in Madrid. This tournament was held before the 2nd Chess Olympiad. However, he decided not to play in the Olympiad that year.

Becoming Spanish Champion

Rey Ardid became the Spanish chess champion for the first time in 1929. He won a match against another strong player, Manuel Golmayo. He won 4 games, lost 1, and drew 2.

He kept his title for a long time, defending it successfully in several matches:

  • In 1933, he beat R. Casas.
  • In 1935, he won against Vicente Almirali Castall.
  • In 1942, he defeated Juan Manuel Fuentes.

His amazing run as champion ended in 1943. He lost his title to José Sanz Aguado in a close match.

Other Important Matches

Ramón Rey Ardid played in many other important chess events. In 1934, he came in second place at a tournament in Sitges, Spain. Andor Lilienthal won that event.

In 1935, he won a match against Victor Kahn in Zaragoza. He also shared first place in a tournament in Hastings, England, during 1935 and 1936.

In 1944, he played against the famous world champion, Alexander Alekhine, in Zaragoza. He also won a match against Francisco Lupi that same year. In 1946, he won a tournament held in Madrid.
