Ramón de Mesonero Romanos (born July 19, 1803 – died April 30, 1882) was a Spanish writer. He was born in Madrid, Spain. He is known for writing about the social life and history of his home city.
About Ramón de Mesonero Romanos
Ramón de Mesonero Romanos loved his hometown, Madrid, from a young age. He was very interested in its history and how the city was laid out (its topography).
In 1831, he published a book called Guía de Madrid (Guide to Madrid). At that time, not many new books were being written in Spain. But Ramón's careful research and clear writing style made his book very popular.
The next year, he started writing a series of articles. These articles were for a magazine called Cartas españolas (Spanish Letters). He used the pen name "El Curioso Parlante," which means "The Curious Talker." In these articles, he wrote about the daily life and customs of people in Madrid. Later, these articles were collected into a book called Panorama matritense (Madrid Panorama), published between 1835 and 1836.
Later Life and Works
In 1838, Ramón de Mesonero Romanos was chosen to be a member of the Spanish Academy. This is a very important group that looks after the Spanish language.
Even though he kept writing, his fame had faded a bit over time. But in 1880, he published a wonderful book about his own life. It was called Memorias de un Setentón, natural y vecino de Madrid (Memories of a Seventy-Year-Old, Native and Resident of Madrid).
He died in Madrid on April 30, 1882. This was shortly after all his collected works were published in eight volumes. Ramón de Mesonero Romanos is buried in the Saint Isidore Cemetery in Madrid.
