Ramiro II facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ramiro II is a name shared by two important kings from Spanish history. Both were powerful rulers in their time, but they lived in different kingdoms and at different periods. This article will tell you a little bit about each of them.

Ramiro II of León

Ramiro II was a king who ruled the Kingdom of León, a Christian kingdom in what is now Spain. He was born around the year 895 and became king in 931. He was known for being a strong military leader.

What was his kingdom like?

The Kingdom of León was one of the main Christian kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. It was often in conflict with the Muslim rulers to the south. Ramiro II spent much of his reign defending and expanding his borders.

Key Achievements

Ramiro II was famous for his victories in battles against the Muslim forces. One of his most important wins was the Battle of Simancas in 939. This battle was a big victory for the Christian kingdoms and helped secure their territories. He was sometimes called "the Devil" by his enemies because of his fierce fighting style. Ramiro II died in 951.

Ramiro II of Aragon

Ramiro II was a different king, who ruled the Kingdom of Aragon, another important Christian kingdom in Spain. He was born around 1086 and became king in 1134. Unlike Ramiro II of León, he was originally a monk before he became king.

Why did a monk become king?

Ramiro became king because his older brother, King Alfonso I, died without any children. To keep the kingdom stable and ensure a successor, Ramiro was called out of the monastery to take the throne. He was known as "the Monk King."

His Time as King

Ramiro II's reign was shorter than his namesake's. He focused on making sure his kingdom had a strong future. He arranged for his daughter, Petronilla, to marry Ramon Berenguer IV, the Count of Barcelona. This marriage was very important because it united the Kingdom of Aragon with the County of Barcelona, creating a much larger and more powerful territory that would later become the Crown of Aragon. Ramiro II died in 1157.
