Raoul I, Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis facts for kids
Raoul I the Red of Clermont was an important French nobleman who lived a long time ago, from before 1140 until 1191. He was known as the Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis, a powerful title that meant he was a leader of a specific region in France. He became count in 1161 and held this position until he died. Raoul was the son of Renaud II, who was also a Count of Clermont.
Raoul's Important Roles
Raoul I held a very significant job in France. From 1174, he was the Constable of France. This was one of the highest positions in the kingdom, making him the chief commander of the king's army. He served under King Philip II of France.
Helping the King
In 1181, there was a time of unrest called the Jacquerie. During this period, Raoul followed the king's orders. He led soldiers to protect an important place called the Abbey of Saint-Leu. This shows how much the king trusted him to keep order and peace.
The Third Crusade
Raoul I was also a brave knight who joined King Philip II on a major journey known as the Third Crusade. Crusades were large military expeditions, often for religious reasons, to the Holy Land. Sadly, Raoul died during this crusade. He was killed on October 15, 1191, while fighting in a very long and difficult battle called the Siege of Acre.
Raoul's Family
Raoul I was married to a woman named Alix de Breteuil. She passed away in 1196. Together, Raoul and Alix had several children:
- Catherine of Clermont: She was born before 1184 and later married Louis de Blois, who was the Count of Blois and Chartres.
- Aelis: She passed away before 1182.
- Mathilde: She married William I, who was a lord (Seigneur) of Vierzon.
- Philippe de Clermont: He died sometime between 1182 and 1192.
After Raoul's death, his son-in-law, Louis de Blois (who married Catherine), became the new Count of Clermont-en-Beauvaisis.
