Maharaja Gangadahra Koviladhikarikal Sri Ravi Varma (1865–1946) was a ruler of Cochin, India. He became the Maharaja in 1943 and ruled until 1946. He was known for being very popular with the people of Cochin, even though his time as ruler was short.
Early Life and Education
Ravi Varma was born on November 29, 1865. His birthplace was Tripunithura, which was part of British India at that time. He was a very well-educated man for his era. He could speak several languages fluently. These included English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Sanskrit. He also knew some Urdu.
Becoming Maharaja
Before becoming Maharaja, Ravi Varma was the Elaya Raja. This title means he was the crown prince, or the next in line to the throne. He became the ruler after his brother, Midukkan Thampuran, passed away on October 13, 1943. Ravi Varma was 78 years old when he became the Maharaja.
His Reign and Legacy
Even though he ruled for only a few years, Maharaja Ravi Varma was greatly admired. People in Cochin loved him because he believed in equality. He treated everyone well, no matter their wealth or background. This was very important during a time when there were big differences between rich and poor.
Maharaja Ravi Varma also had many talents. He was a skilled painter, especially with oil paints. It is also believed that he was a famous polo player when he was younger.
Family Life
Maharaja Ravi Varma was married to Kamakshi Nethiyar. They had four children together. Their children were named Balagopalan, Chandrasekharan, DevakiNandanan, and UmaLakshmi Amma. Their daughter, UmaLakshmi Amma, later married Rama Varma Thampuran. Their child, SaradaMani Varma, became the Valia Thampuran of the Cochin Royal Family.
Passing Away
Maharaja Ravi Varma passed away in 1946 in Tripunithura. He was 81 years old. After his death, his maternal cousin became the new ruler. This was Maharaja Sri Kerala Varma, also known as Ikyakeralam Thampuran.
