A Golden Discovery

Something very exciting was found on Rawdon Billing a long time ago. In 1778, a gold "torc" was discovered. A torc is a type of necklace or collar. It was often made from twisted metal. These were worn by people in ancient times. We don't know where this special gold torc is now. It's a bit of a mystery!

Stone and Coal

Rawdon Billing was once used as a quarry. This means people dug out stone from the hill. This stone was used for building. For example, some stone from the Billing was used in Leeds city centre. It helped build the base of a building at 48 Albion Street. This building used to be a bank. Now, it's a Starbucks coffee shop!

There is also a small amount of coal on the Billing. However, there are no signs that people ever mined for coal there. Mining means digging deep into the ground to get minerals.
