Ray Belton is an American leader in education. He was the president-chancellor of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This university is a historically black public university. He held this important role from 2015 to 2022.

Ray Belton studied at Southern University. There, he earned his first college degree, a bachelor's degree. He then continued his studies. He received a master's degree in counseling from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Later, he earned a Ph.D. in educational administration. This highest degree came from the University of Texas at Austin.
Career in Education
Belton started his career in education. He became an assistant professor at Southern University. This was the same university where he had studied.
Leading Southern University at Shreveport
From 2000 to 2015, Belton was the chancellor of the Southern University at Shreveport. As chancellor, he was in charge of the campus. During his time there, the number of students grew a lot. Student enrollment went up by 156 percent. Also, the number of students who graduated doubled.
