Ray Belton is an American leader in education. He was the president-chancellor of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Southern University is a public university that has a special history of serving African American students. He held this important role from 2015 to 2022.
Ray Belton's Early Life and Education
Ray Belton studied at Southern University and earned his first college degree there. He then went on to get a master's degree in counseling from the University of Nebraska. Later, he earned a Ph.D. (which is a very high degree) in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin.
His Career in Education
Belton started his career in education as a professor at Southern University, the same place where he earned his first degree.
From 2000 to 2015, Belton was the chancellor of the Southern University at Shreveport. As a leader there, he helped the school grow a lot. The number of students joining the university went up by 156 percent. Also, the number of students who graduated from the university doubled during his time.
After that, starting in 2015, Belton became the president-chancellor of the main Southern University campus in Baton Rouge. He served in this role until 2022.
