Raynham, also known as the Kneeland Townsend House, is a very old and special home in New Haven, Connecticut. It's famous for its beautiful design, called Gothic Revival style. This house has been owned by the same family, the Townshends, for seven generations! Its history goes all the way back to when New Haven was first settled in the 1630s. Raynham was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 because it's so important.

What Does Raynham Look Like?
Raynham is located in New Haven, Connecticut. It sits on the east side of Townsend Avenue. The property is quite large, covering about 15 acres. This area includes beautiful, scenic grounds.
The main house was first built in 1804. Back then, it had a style called Federal. But in the 1850s, the house was changed a lot. This is when it got its unique Gothic Revival look. The estate also has other buildings. These include a carriage house and a caretaker's house. There are also farm buildings. Three more structures, like a gazebo, were added in the 1920s.
A Look Back in Time
The land for Raynham was first given to the Tuttle family in 1640. This gift came from the leaders of the New Haven Colony. Later, in 1797, the land was sold. It was bought by Isaac and Kneeland Townsend. They were important business people in the area.
Kneeland Townsend built the main part of the house in 1804. Some of the other buildings on the property also date back to his time. The estate got its big makeover in the 1850s. This new design followed ideas from Calvert Vaux. He was a famous architect who loved the Carpenter Gothic style. Raynham is still New Haven's largest private home property today.
