Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Reading was once a small town in Pike County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, it's known as a ghost town because no one lives there anymore. It's like a place that used to be busy but is now quiet and empty.

What Happened to Reading?

Reading was named after a pioneer settler named William Reading. A "pioneer settler" is someone who was among the first people to move to and live in a new area.

The Post Office Years

For a while, Reading had its own post office. This post office opened in 1868. Having a post office was a big deal for a small community because it meant people could send and receive letters and packages. It was a sign that the town was active and connected to the outside world. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1901. After the post office closed, the town slowly became less active until it was no longer a populated place.
