Regina Bianchi (born January 1, 1921 – died April 5, 2013) was a famous Italian actress who worked in both theater and movies. She was known for her strong performances and long career.
Life and Career
Regina Bianchi was born in Lecce, Italy, with the name Regina D'Antigny. Her parents were also actors, so she grew up around the theater. During a time when the government didn't like foreign names, she had to change her last name. She chose Bianchi, which was her grandmother's last name.
When she was 16, Regina joined a theater group led by Raffaele Viviani. She made her acting debut that same year in a play called Campagna napoletana, where she played the main character, Reginella. In 1939, she starred in the movie Il ponte di vetro. On the set of this film, she met and became engaged to the director Goffredo Alessandrini. They were partners for more than 20 years.
Regina announced she was retiring in 1944. However, she returned to acting in 1959. Her big comeback role was playing Filumena Marturano in a play by Eduardo De Filippo. She won two important awards called the Nastro d'Argento for Best Supporting Actress. She won the first in 1963 for her role in the movie The Four Days of Naples. She won her second award in 1996 for the movie Camerieri.
She also played Anna, who was the mother of Mary, in the television miniseries Jesus of Nazareth in 1977. In 1996, Regina Bianchi was given a special award called Grand Officer of the Italian Republic for her amazing work in the arts. She passed away at the age of 92 in her home in Rome.
