Renato Birolli facts for kids
Renato Birolli (born December 10, 1905, died May 3, 1959) was an important Italian painter. He is known for his changing art styles and for standing up against the Fascist government in Italy.
A Young Artist's Start
Renato Birolli was born in Verona, Italy, in 1905. His family worked in factories. In 1923, when he was about 18 years old, he moved to Milan. There, he joined other young artists like Renato Guttuso and Giacomo Manzù. Together, they formed a group that wanted to create new and exciting art. This was called an avant-garde group, meaning they were ahead of their time.
Art and Politics
In 1937, Birolli became part of an art movement called Corrente di Vita. This group believed that art should be connected to real life and social issues. In the same year, he was arrested by the Fascist government. This government, led by Benito Mussolini, ruled Italy at the time. Birolli was arrested because he was against their ideas.
After his arrest, Birolli stopped painting for a while. He decided to focus on supporting the Communist Party. Later, he joined the partisan resistance. These were groups of people who secretly fought against the Fascist government during World War II.
New Styles in Paris
After World War II ended, in 1947, Birolli moved to Paris, France. Paris was a very important city for art. Here, his painting style began to change. He was inspired by famous artists like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
First, his art moved towards a style called post-Cubism. Cubism is an art style where objects are broken up into geometric shapes. After this, his art became more abstract. This means his paintings didn't show real objects or people clearly. Instead, they used colors, shapes, and lines to express feelings and ideas. This new style was sometimes called "lyrical abstraction" because it was very expressive and poetic.
Later Life
Renato Birolli died suddenly in Milan in 1959, when he was 53 years old. His son, Zeno Birolli (1939–2014), also became involved in art. He was an art critic and historian, meaning he studied and wrote about art.
