The Reno Main Post Office building, located at 50 S. Virginia Street in Reno, Nevada, has a rich history. It was built in 1933 and served as the city's main post office for many years. This important building was designed by a famous Nevada architect, Frederic J. DeLongchamps.

What Makes This Building Special?

The Reno Main Post Office was built by the MacDonald Engineering Company. It cost about $363,660 to build, which was a lot of money back then! In 1990, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important historical site.

Its Unique Style

Experts have called this building an "outstanding example" of a post office and federal office building. It's special because it's the only U.S. government-built post office in Nevada with an Art Deco or Moderne style. Art Deco is a cool design style from the 1920s and 1930s. It uses geometric shapes and sleek lines. Even though it has Art Deco touches, its overall look is also described as "Starved Classical". This means it has simple, traditional elements without too much decoration.

A New Purpose

The building no longer serves as Reno's main post office. In 2007, it was given a new life! It was changed into a business office building and is now called 'West Elm'. The main Reno Post Office is now located on Vassar Street.
