The Reuben Lamprey Homestead is a really old and special house located at 416 Winnacunnet Road in Hampton, New Hampshire. It was built way back in the 1770s! This amazing place is known as the best-preserved farm from the colonial times in Hampton. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Discovering the Reuben Lamprey Homestead

The Reuben Lamprey Homestead sits on the north side of Winnacunnet Road. This road is quite busy, connecting Presidential Circle and Nathaniel Way. Imagine a house that has stood for centuries, watching the world change around it!

What Does the House Look Like?

The main house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. There's a big chimney right in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboard.

The front of the house is very balanced and neat. It has five sections, or "bays," with windows placed evenly. The main door is in the center. It has small windows on either side and decorative flat columns next to them. Above the door, there's a window with seven small panes of glass and a fancy frame.

Barn and Other Buildings

Behind the main house, there are two additions, called "ells." These were added in the 1900s. Further back and to the right, you'll find a barn made of timber. This barn is also very old and adds to the historic feel of the property.

A Glimpse into History: The Lamprey Family

The main house was built in the 1770s by a man named Reuben Lamprey. His family was among the very first people to settle in this area of Hampton. Think about it: this house was built even before the United States became its own country!

Changes Over Time

Both the house and the barn have stayed mostly the same since they were built. There haven't been many big changes. The main updates were replacing the additions at the back of the house. The barn also needed some repairs. At one point, part of it fell down because it wasn't being looked after.

After it was fixed, the barn was used as a popular antique shop for a while. It must have been cool to shop for old treasures in such a historic building! The Lamprey family owned this special property until 1881, when they sold it.
