Rhoshii Wells (born December 30, 1976 – died August 11, 2008) was an American boxer. He won a bronze medal in the Middleweight boxing division at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Rhoshii was born in Austin, Texas.
Amateur Career
Before becoming a professional boxer, Rhoshii Wells had a successful amateur career. This means he boxed for fun or competition without getting paid. His biggest achievement as an amateur was winning an Olympic medal.
At the 1996 Summer Olympics, he competed in the Middleweight category. Here are his results:
- He won against Kourosh Molaei from Iran with a score of 24-7.
- He also won against Ricardo Rodríguez from Brazil, 16-2.
- He then defeated Dilshod Yarbekov from Uzbekistan. The score was tied at 8-8, but the judges decided he won.
- In the next match, he lost to Ariel Hernández from Cuba with a score of 8-17. This loss meant he earned the bronze medal.
Professional Career
After the Olympics, Rhoshii Wells became a professional boxer in 1997. He was known by the nickname "The Great One." He started his professional career very well, winning 17 matches and having 2 draws (ties) without any losses. These fights were in the Light Middleweight division.
His strong start led him to a big fight in 2003. He challenged Alejandro Garcia for the WBA Light Middleweight Title. Rhoshii was ahead on the judges' scorecards, but Garcia managed to stop him in the 11th round. In 2005, Rhoshii had a chance for a rematch with Garcia, but he lost again in the 9th round.
Later, Rhoshii Wells tried to make a comeback in boxing. He joined the third season of a TV show called The Contender, which was about boxing. However, he was eliminated from the show before the main competition even began.
Later Life
Rhoshii Wells sadly passed away on August 11, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
