Natural range of Rhus virens |
The Evergreen Sumac (scientific name: Rhus virens) is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the same plant family as the mango, called Anacardiaceae. This plant is found naturally in certain parts of the United States, including Arizona, southern New Mexico, and Texas. It also grows in northern and central Mexico, reaching as far south as Oaxaca.
People often call this plant by its common names: evergreen sumac or tobacco sumac.
Different Kinds of Evergreen Sumac
Just like there can be different types of apples, there are also different types, or "varieties," of Evergreen Sumac. Scientists have identified two main varieties:
- Rhus virens var. choriophylla – This variety is also known as Mearns' sumac.
- Rhus virens var. virens – This is the typical variety of the evergreen sumac.
