A Special Place for Wrestlers
In the 1970s, American professional wrestlers started visiting Ribera Steakhouse when they were in Tokyo for matches. Wrestler Stan Hansen is often given credit for finding the restaurant. However, he says that Bruiser Brody was the first American wrestler to discover it.
Over time, the restaurant's owner began to cover the walls with hundreds of pictures. These photos show all the wrestlers who have eaten there. The owner even changes the pictures to show the wrestlers who are currently visiting Japan. The restaurant is also decorated with other cool items. You can see things like championship belts and trophies from different sports.
The Ribera Jacket
The owners of Ribera Steakhouse give out a special jacket to some of their guests. This jacket is made of satin and has a bull logo on the front. It became very popular when wrestler Road Warrior Animal started wearing it.
Getting a Ribera Steakhouse Jacket became a special tradition for American wrestlers. It was like a sign that they had visited Japan and were part of the wrestling community there. Wrestler Ricky Fuji once said that in English, the word "Ribera" means, "I'm a wrestler, and I've been to Japan."
What's on the Menu?
Ribera Steakhouse serves New York-style steaks. You can choose from three different sizes:
- 1/2 pound (about 225 grams)
- 1 pound (about 450 grams)
- 1 1/2 pounds (about 680 grams)
The steaks come with side dishes like corn, rice, salad, and soup.
The Ribera Akebono Challenge
For those who are really hungry, there's a special eating challenge called the "Ribera Akebono challenge." To win, you must eat 1.35 kilograms (about 3 pounds) of steak. You also have to eat several side dishes. You need to finish all of this in under 30 minutes! If you succeed, you win 10,000 yen. In June 2022, this was about US$73.
Restaurant Locations
Ribera Steakhouse has two locations in Japan. The first and original restaurant is in a place called Gotanda. A second, larger restaurant was built in Shimomeguro. This bigger location is run by the original owner's son.
