Richard Duppa (1770–1831) was an English writer and artist. He was known for his books about art, especially about famous artists like Michael Angelo and Raffaele. He also wrote about plants and his travels.

About Richard Duppa

Richard Duppa was born in Shropshire, England. When he was young, he studied art in Rome, Italy. He was a very skilled artist who could draw well. Later, he went to Trinity College, Oxford and Trinity Hall, Cambridge to study.

He wrote many books on different topics. These included art, plants, and even some political ideas. He was also chosen to be a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, which is a group for people interested in history and old things. He passed away in London in 1831.

  • A Journal of … the subversion of the Ecclesiastical Government in 1798: This book was about changes in government in 1798.

  • The Life and Literary Works of Michael Angelo Buonarotti: This was a detailed book about the life and art of the famous artist Michael Angelo. It included his poems and letters.
  • Elements of [Linnæan] Botany: A book about the basics of plant science.
  • Illustrations of the Lotus of Antiquity: This book showed pictures of the lotus flower from ancient times.
  • The Classes and Orders of the Linnæan System of Botany: Another book about how plants are grouped and classified.
  • Dr. Johnson's Diary of a Journey into North Wales in 1774: Duppa helped publish the travel diary of a famous writer, Dr. Johnson.

Duppa also wrote shorter papers about things like how books are copyrighted and the price of food. He also created many schoolbooks for learning classical subjects. His large collection of books was sold after he died.

His Family

Richard Duppa had a relative with the same name who passed away in Shropshire in 1831. His elder brother, John Wood Duppa (1762–1840), was a church leader in Herefordshire.
