Richard Hare, Viscount Ennismore facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Richard Lysaght Hare, also known as Viscount Ennismore, was an important politician from Ireland who lived from March 20, 1773, to September 24, 1827. He was part of an Anglo-Irish family, meaning his family had roots in both England and Ireland.

Early Life and Family

Richard Lysaght Hare was the son of William Hare, who later became the first Earl of Listowel. His mother was Mary Wrixon. Richard married Catherine Dillon on June 10, 1797. Catherine was the eldest daughter of Robert Dillon, who was the first Baron Clonbrock. Together, Richard and Catherine had seven children.

His Political Career

Richard Lysaght Hare became a Member of Parliament (MP), which is a person elected to represent people in a government assembly.

Serving in the Irish Parliament

From 1798, Richard served in the Irish House of Commons. This was the main law-making body in Ireland at the time. He represented the area called Athy. His father also served as an MP for Athy at the same time.

Their time in the Irish Parliament ended in 1800. This was because of the Acts of Union 1800. These laws joined the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain, creating the United Kingdom. After these acts, the Irish Parliament no longer existed, and Irish MPs instead went to the UK Parliament in London.

Serving in the UK Parliament

After the Acts of Union, Richard continued his political career. From 1812 to 1827, he represented Cork County in the UK Parliament. He was a member of the Tory political party.

Viscount Ennismore

In 1800, Richard started to be called "The Honourable." This is a special title given to children of certain noble families. Later, in 1822, his father was given the title of Earl of Listowel. When this happened, Richard started using the title Viscount Ennismore. This was a "courtesy title," meaning he used it because he was expected to inherit his father's higher title one day.

However, Richard Lysaght Hare passed away in 1827, before his father did. This meant he never officially became the Earl of Listowel. Instead, when his father died, the title of Earl of Listowel went to Richard's eldest son, William Hare, 2nd Earl of Listowel.
