Early Life and Family
Richard Henyekane grew up in the Galeshewe township, which is located in Kimberley, South Africa. He came from a family of footballers. His younger brother, Joseph Henyekane, was also a professional football player.
Football Career Highlights
Richard Henyekane began his professional football journey in 2004. His first game was for Premier United-Hellenic against Jomo Cosmos on 8 February 2004.
Playing for Golden Arrows
In the 2004/05 season, Henyekane joined the team Golden Arrows. He scored his first goal for them on 19 January 2005, in a 1–1 draw against Manning Rangers.
Henyekane had his best season with Golden Arrows during the 2009–2010 PSL (Premier Soccer League) season. He was a fantastic striker, scoring three hat-tricks in the league. A hat-trick means scoring three goals in one game! He finished that season with 19 league goals. Overall, he scored 23 goals that season, including another hat-trick in the Telkom Knockout cup.
Moving to Mamelodi Sundowns
After his amazing performance, Mamelodi Sundowns signed Richard Henyekane. This was a big move for him. On 4 March 2012, he helped his new team set a record in the Nedbank Cup. They won a game by an incredible score of 24–0 against Powerlines FC. Henyekane himself scored five goals in that match!
Time with Free State Stars
In 2014, Henyekane moved to Free State Stars. First, he joined them on loan, and then the move became permanent in July 2014. During his time there, he played in 18 league games and scored seven goals. His last match was on 4 April 2015, as a substitute against AmaZulu. His final goal came on 6 May 2014, in a 1–1 draw against Orlando Pirates.
Playing for South Africa
Richard Henyekane was first called to play for the South Africa national football team in 2009. He made his official international debut on 12 August 2009, in a game against Serbia. He played a total of nine matches for his country.
Richard Henyekane sadly passed away on 7 April 2015, due to a car accident.
