Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Richard Jones (born around 1757 – died 1814) was a Welsh Anglican priest and a writer. He spent his life serving the church and sharing his ideas through books.

Who Was Richard Jones?

Richard Jones was born in Wales sometime around 1757. We know this because when he passed away on April 23, 1814, he was 57 years old. He grew up to become an important figure in the church and a respected writer.

His Education and Early Career

In 1783, Richard Jones became an Anglican priest. Before that, he studied at Jesus College, Oxford, where he earned a special degree called a BA. This education helped him prepare for his work in the church.

After his studies, he became a curate in a town called Ruthin. A curate is like an assistant priest who helps the main priest. Richard Jones was known for being very good at languages like Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Because of his skills, he might have also taught at Ruthin School. It was quite common for curates in that area to teach at the local school.

Serving the Church

Richard Jones continued his work in the church. In 1806, he was given an important role as the rector of Llanychan. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church and its parish. Even after moving to Llanychan, it seems he kept his connections and friendships in Ruthin.

His Writings

Richard Jones was also a dedicated writer. He wrote several religious books. Between 1801 and 1807, he published special commentaries on each of the four Gospels. The Gospels are parts of the Bible that tell the story of Jesus. He also wrote other religious works in the Welsh language, which was his native tongue.
