Richard Magenis was an important politician from Ireland who lived a long time ago, from about 1763 to 1831. He was part of a group called "Unionists." This meant he supported Ireland being joined with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom. He served in both the Irish Parliament and later the British Parliament, representing a town called Enniskillen.

Who Was Richard Magenis?

Richard Magenis was born around 1763. He came from a well-known Anglo-Irish family. His father, also named Richard Magenis, was a politician too. Richard Magenis had a brother, William Magenis, who became a Dean (a church leader). Besides being a politician, Richard Magenis was also a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Fermanagh Militia, which was a local army group.

His Time in Parliament

Richard Magenis first became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish Parliament in 1790. He represented Enniskillen until 1797.

Later, in 1801, a big change happened: Ireland and Great Britain joined together to form the United Kingdom. This event was called the Union of Great Britain and Ireland. After this, Richard Magenis continued his political career. From 1812 to 1828, he represented Enniskillen again, but this time in the British Parliament. He was a member of the Tory party, which was one of the main political groups at the time.

His Family Life

Richard Magenis was married twice. His first wife was Lady Elizabeth Anne Cole. They got married in 1788 and had nine children together: five sons and four daughters.

  • Henry Arthur Magenis, who became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the army.

After Lady Elizabeth Anne Cole passed away in 1807, Richard Magenis married Elizabeth Callander. With his second wife, he had another son named Frederick Richard Magenis.

Richard Magenis passed away on March 6, 1831.
