Who Was Lord Delvin?
Richard Nugent was born in 1742. He was the oldest son of Thomas Nugent, 6th Earl of Westmeath. When his father became an Earl in 1754, Richard started using the special title of Lord Delvin. This title is called a "courtesy title" because it's used out of respect, even though he wasn't officially an Earl himself yet.
Early Life and Career
In 1759, when he was still quite young, Lord Delvin became a Member of Parliament for an area called Fore in Ireland. A Member of Parliament is someone elected to represent people in the government. Even though he was underage for some roles, he was able to serve.
He also joined the military. He became a cornet in the 1st Regiment of Dragoons. A cornet was a junior officer rank in a cavalry unit, which meant he rode a horse in battle.
A Historical Event
In July 1761, when Lord Delvin was only 19 years old, he was involved in a serious event. He had a sword fight, known as a duel, with Captain George Reilly. Duels were formal fights, often with swords or pistols, used to settle disagreements in those times. This duel happened in a music room at a place called Marlborough Bowling Green in Dublin.
Sadly, Lord Delvin was badly hurt during the duel and later died. This event was so well-known that it caused Marlborough Bowling Green to stop being a popular place for people to visit.
