Richard Paul Blakeney (born in 1820, died in 1884) was an Irish writer and church leader. He was known for strongly supporting certain Christian beliefs within the Church of England. He wrote many books and pamphlets that were widely read and discussed.

A Life of Faith and Learning

Richard Blakeney came from an old family that had moved to Ireland. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, a famous university. In 1842, he earned his first degree, showing great skill in theology, which is the study of religious beliefs. Later, he earned more advanced degrees in law.

Blakeney began his church career in 1843 as a curate at St Paul's Church in Nottingham, England. A curate is like an assistant to the main priest. He then became a vicar in different towns, including Hyson Green, Birkenhead, and Bridlington. A vicar is the main priest in charge of a church parish.

He also held other important roles. In 1876, he became a rural dean of Bridlington. This meant he helped oversee several churches in the area. Later, in 1882, he became a canon of York, which is a senior position within the church. The University of Edinburgh also gave him an honorary degree in 1868. Richard Blakeney passed away in Bridlington on December 31, 1884.

His Published Works

Richard Blakeney wrote many books that shared his religious views. These books were often about explaining and defending the ideas of the Protestant faith against other beliefs. Some of his well-known works include:

  • Translation of the Moral Theology of Alphonsus Liguori, published in 1845.
  • A Manual of Romish Controversy, from 1851. This book aimed to explain and argue against the beliefs of Pope Pius IV. It was very popular and went through ten editions.
  • Protestant Catechism, published in 1854. This book explained Protestantism using parts of the Bible.
  • History and Interpretation of the Book of Common Prayer, from 1865. This work looked at the history and meaning of the main prayer book used in the Church of England.
