Richard Power, the 1st Baron Power of Curraghmore, was an important figure in Irish history during the 1500s. He was a nobleman who held a special title given by the King. His family was from a place called Curraghmore in County Waterford, Ireland.

Early Life and Family

Richard Power was the oldest son of Piers Power. His family, also known as Poer, were part of the "Old English" community in Ireland. This means they were descendants of English people who came to Ireland many centuries before.

His mother's name is not known, but she was the daughter of Gerald FitzGerald of Decies. Gerald was a son of a powerful nobleman, James FitzGerald, who was the 6th Earl of Desmond. Gerald was given the Decies region as his own land, which made him the first lord of Decies.

Richard had three brothers: Piers, Nicholas, and William. William became a Knight of St. John of Jerusalem, which was a religious and military order. He also had a sister named Ellen.

Marriage and Children

Richard Power married Catherine Butler. She was the second daughter of Piers Butler, who was the 8th Earl of Ormond. The Earls of Ormond were another very important and powerful family in Ireland.

Richard and Catherine had three sons and two daughters:

  • Piers (born around 1522, died 1544) became the 2nd Baron after his father. He died young and did not marry.
  • John (born around 1529 or 1530, died 1592) became the 3rd Baron. He married Eleanor FitzGerald, whose father was the 13th Earl of Desmond.
  • Thomas was their third son.
  • Katherine married Sir Nicholas Devereux.
  • Elice married Thomas FitzGerald.

Becoming a Baron

Richard Power was given the title of Baron "Le Power and Coroghmore" by King Henry VIII of England. This special title was granted on September 13, 1535. Being a Baron meant he was a nobleman with certain rights and responsibilities.

Death

Richard Power died on November 10, 1538. He was killed during an Irish rebellion by a man named Connor O'Callaghan.
