Sir Richard Powle (1628 – 12 July 1678) was an English lawyer and politician. He lived at Shottesbrooke Park in Berkshire. Sir Richard was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, from 1660 until he passed away in 1678.

Early Life and Education

Richard Powle was born in Shottesbrooke in 1628. He was the oldest son of Henry Powle and Katherine Herbert. His father was an important local official called the Sheriff for Berkshire in 1633.

When he was 18, Richard went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university. This was in 1646. Later, in 1654, he became a lawyer after studying at Lincoln's Inn. He also inherited Shottesbrooke Park from his father in 1646.

A Career in Parliament

In 1660, Sir Richard Powle was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Berkshire. An MP is someone elected to represent people in Parliament, helping to make laws for the country. He was elected during a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

He was re-elected in 1661 to another Parliament, known as the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to serve as an MP until his death in 1678. In 1661, he was also given the special title of Knight of the Bath. This was an honor given by the King.

From 1665 to 1671, Sir Richard worked for the Duchess of York, managing her horses and household. In 1667, he also helped organize the Duke of York's household.

Family and Later Life

Sir Richard Powle married Anne Crispe by 1673. Anne was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Crispe. Sir Richard and Anne had two sons.

His brother, Henry Powle, also became a very important politician. Henry was even the Speaker of the House of Commons of England for a short time in 1689. The Speaker is like the leader of the debates in Parliament.

Sir Richard Powle passed away at the age of 49. He was buried in Shottesbrooke Church.
