Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Richard St George (born in 1657, died on September 28, 1726) was an important landowner in Ireland. He owned large areas of land and was involved in the government of his time.

Sir Richard was the only son of Sir George St George of Dunmore, a place in County Galway, Ireland. His first cousin was George St George, who later became the 1st Baron St George.

Family Life and Marriage

In June 1686, Sir Richard married Anne Eyre. She was the daughter of Colonel John Eyre. They did not have any children together. Anne passed away in November 1719.

A Career in Politics

Sir Richard St George was elected to the Irish House of Commons in September 1703. This was like being a Member of Parliament (MP) today. He represented the area of Clogher. He continued to serve as an MP until he died.

In October 1711, he inherited his father's estates, which were all the lands and properties in County Galway. On November 23, 1715, he was given a special role in the government. He was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland. This council advised the King or Queen on important matters.

His Legacy and Heirs

Sir Richard St George passed away in September 1726. He did not have any children from his marriage to Anne. Because of this, his four sisters who were still alive became the joint owners of the Dunmore property.

Eventually, his niece, Elizabeth, became the sole owner of the estate. She was married to Sir Ralph Gore, 4th Baronet. This meant that the Dunmore property then became part of the Gore baronets family.

Sir Richard also had a daughter named Mary St George. She was born outside of his marriage. Mary later married James Mansergh in 1749. Their son, Richard Mansergh St George, was killed in 1798 during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. He was the ancestor of the St George family who lived in Headford.
