Who Was Richard Warburton?

Richard Warburton was the third son in his family. His father was Peter Warburton, from a place called Hefferston Grange in Cheshire, England. His mother was Alice Cooper.

Early Life and Education

Richard Warburton started his education at Clement's Inn. Later, in 1583, he continued his studies at Lincoln's Inn. These were places where people learned about law and government.

A Career in Public Service

Around 1592, Richard Warburton became a "gentleman pensioner." This meant he was a special attendant to the monarch, receiving a regular payment. He held this position until he died.

In 1600, he took on two important roles:

  • He became the Constable of Lancaster Castle. This person was in charge of the castle and its surrounding area.
  • He was also the steward of Lonsdale hundred. A "hundred" was an old way of dividing up land, and a steward managed its affairs.

In 1603, he was given the title of "Sir" when he was knighted. This was a special honor from the King.

In 1604, he was elected again as an MP, this time for Penryn. He continued to serve in Parliament until he passed away in 1610.

Family Life

Around 1603, Sir Richard Warburton married Anne Vavasour. Her aunt, also named Anne Vavasour, was a "lady of the bedchamber" to Queen Elizabeth I. This meant she was a close attendant to the Queen. Anne Vavasour's brother was Thomas Vavasour.
