Richmond's Past
Richmond has an interesting history! When Christchurch was first being built, there was a big idea to create canals. These canals would help transport goods and people into the city from places like the port. Buildings were put up in Richmond in the 1850s, hoping that a canal would connect it to other planned canals in Linwood and Shirley.
However, this canal plan was eventually cancelled in 1867. This happened after the Lyttelton tunnel opened, which made transport much easier.
The area was first called Bingsland, named after a person called Bing. He had a long-term lease on some church land there. Later, the name was changed to Richmond. It was named after Richmond Hill in London, England.
Avebury House
Avebury House is a large, two-story building in Richmond. It was built in 1885, with more parts added in 1907. It's located just north of the Avon River and has beautiful gardens that are open to everyone.
In the early 1970s, Avebury House was used as a youth hostel. Later, in the late 1990s, it was almost torn down. Luckily, it was saved and became a community centre for everyone to enjoy.
